an instructional strategy in which an adult offers assistance to elicit a response from a child. In verbal prompting, a teacher uses questions or verbal cues to help a child give a response (e.g., during an alphabet hunt, a teacher says, “I see the letter A in this word. Can you find the letter A?”). In nonverbal prompting, an adult uses gestures, expectant looks, and physical assistance to help a child give a response (e.g., during the same alphabet hunt in which the child is asked to find the letter A, the teacher points to the work and looks expectantly at the child).
