The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides broad supports related to serving children with disabilities and their families. An important provision within IDEA addresses the need for transition planning. State and local agencies are required to plan for every child as he or she exits early intervention or Part C services, as part of the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP).
In addition to IDEA, children served through Early Head Start and Head Start are afforded supports for transition planning through the Head Start Program Performance Standards.
