Learning Objectives
- Describe effective practices for communicating with professionals and families in the context of early education and intervention.
- Use a decision-making process to select communication practices linked to specific purposes including attending and active listening, seeking and verifying, and supporting and joining.
In Step 1 you will hear and read about two perspectives on a practice dilemma. The dilemma is about communication.
In Step 2 you will turn the dilemma about how to communicate effectively into an answerable question to help guide the search for evidence on a particular practice.
In Step 3 you will consider key sources of general evidence about communication practices.
First communication practices are defined and further explained with examples and activities. Then you will learn about research, policies, professional guidelines and experience-based knowledge related to communication.
In Step 4 you will integrate sources of general evidence with different perspectives, and contexts unique to the dilemma in Step 1 to make an informed decision.
In Step 5 you will consider ways to evaluate the plan for using specific communication practices that resulted from the decision-making process. This will involve determining if the communication strategies were implemented as planned, determining how effective these strategies were, and using the results to improve communication strategies in the future.
