Once a decision has been reached to use specific communication strategies, you will need to think about how these strategies will be implemented. The implementation plan requires that you:
- Identify what purpose Shawanda (the teacher) is trying to achieve through her communication with Ashley (the therapist). Specifically, based on what you learned about the dilemma in Step 1, is the teacher focused on attending and active listening, seeking and verifying information, or joining and supporting?
- Review the communication strategies that are recommended to achieve this purpose, and
- Select the communication strategies that Shawanda will use in future meetings with Ashley.
Identify the purpose for communication
At this point, Shawanda (the teacher) needs to gain a better understanding of Ashley’s (the therapist’s) role and her ideas about how they should work together to address David’s learning goals in the classroom. This means that Shawanda needs to gather additional information and verify it before she can share her own ideas and work with Ashley to develop a plan together.
Review recommended communication strategies
Review the communication strategies that are used to seek and verify information in Handout 3.1.
Select specific communication strategies that will be implemented
Complete the implementation plan to show how Shawanda (the teacher) will use specific communication strategies to help her seek and verify information in future meetings with Ashley (the therapist). Note that Shawanda can also use other communication strategies related to attending and active listening, or joining and supporting while she is seeking and verifying information.
