Models of tiered instruction for academic practices

Below are some specific early childhood models of tiered approaches for academic practices:

• Recognition & Response- RTI for Pre-K (R&R) is a three-tiered model of Response to Intervention (RTI) specifically designed for use with pre-kindergarten children and focused on their academic learning in language, literacy, and mathematics. This site offers video demonstrations and other resources addressing the key components of R&R: (1) recognition, which involves conducting universal screening on all children and periodically monitoring the progress of some children who need additional instructional supports; and (2) response, which includes providing effective core instruction and tiered interventions linked to children’s learning needs.
• Center for Response to Intervention in Early Childhood (CRTIEC) is funded by the Institute for Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education. Its mission is to conduct research and provide resources that support the application of Response to Intervention in early childhood education. To that end, CRTIEC is developing and validating formative assessment measures and intervention resources and providing national leadership on RTI in early childhood to policy makers, researchers, and practitioners.

Below are some additional resources on RTI:

• National Center on Response to Intervention is housed at the American Institutes for Research and works in conjunction with researchers from Vanderbilt University and the University of Kansas. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). The Center’s mission is to provide technical assistance to states and districts and build the capacity of states to assist districts in implementing proven models for RTI in K-12 education.
• RTI Action Network is dedicated to the effective implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) in school districts serving K-12 students nationwide. The goal is to guide educators and families in the large-scale implementation of RTI so that each child has access to quality instruction and that struggling students – including those with learning disabilities – are identified early and receive the necessary supports to be successful. The RTI Action Network is a program of the National Center for Learning Disabilities, funded by the Cisco Foundation and in partnership with the nation’s leading education associations and top RTI experts.
