Module 5: Assistive Technology

Learning Objectives

  • Describe assistive technology interventions to promote children’s access to and participation in inclusive settings.
  • Use a decision-making process to help integrate various sources of evidence and determine whether assistive technology interventions are appropriate for use within a specific context.

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 1 you will hear and read about two perspectives on a practice dilemma. The dilemma is about a child’s use of assistive technology in an inclusive setting as viewed through the eyes of both the family child care provider and the family.

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 2 you will turn the dilemma about how Ms. Mary can use assistive technology to help Sophie communicate into an answerable question to help guide the search on a particular practice.

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 3 you will consider the following key sources of general evidence about assistive technology interventions. First you will learn about the research related to assistive technology interventions. Then assistive technology will be defined and further explained with examples and activities. Last, you will learn about policies, professional guidelines and experience-based knowledge related to assistive technology interventions.

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 4 you will integrate sources of evidence, different perspectives and contexts unique to the dilemma in Step 1 to make an informed decision.

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 5 you will consider ways to evaluate the plan for using assistive technology interventions that resulted from the decision-making process.

Dilemma

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 1 you will hear and read about two perspectives on a practice dilemma. The dilemma is about a child’s use of assistive technology in an inclusive setting as viewed through the eyes of both the family child care provider and the family.

Question
5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 2 you will turn the dilemma about how Ms. Mary can use assistive technology to help Sophie communicate into an answerable question to help guide the search on a particular practice.
Evidence

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 3 you will consider the following key sources of general evidence about assistive technology interventions. First you will learn about the research related to assistive technology interventions. Then assistive technology will be defined and further explained with examples and activities. Last, you will learn about policies, professional guidelines and experience-based knowledge related to assistive technology interventions.

Decision

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 4 you will integrate sources of evidence, different perspectives and contexts unique to the dilemma in Step 1 to make an informed decision.

Evaluation

5-STEP LEARNING CYCLE™In Step 5 you will consider ways to evaluate the plan for using assistive technology interventions that resulted from the decision-making process.
